Industrial designer Tej Chauhan has reimagined Rado’s iconic DiaStar watch, infusing it with bold colors and a striking gold-toned bezel inspired by futuristic sci-fi aesthetics. This latest collaboration follows his previous work on the Rado True Square, reinforcing his signature “emotive industrial design” approach.

A Modern Take on a 1960s Classic
Originally introduced in 1962, the DiaStar was groundbreaking for its scratch-proof design and distinctive curved case. Chauhan’s update maintains the integrity of the original while introducing a fresh perspective. The watch now features a Ceramos ceramic alloy bezel coated in a yellow gold-tone, offering a contemporary take on traditional gold watches.
Beneath the faceted sapphire crystal, the matte-black concave dial includes a unique “party time” indicator. Between 9 and 12 o’clock, the dial shifts to a vivid blue, emphasizing a playful design element. Chauhan explained that this unconventional feature adds personality while maintaining the watch’s refined character.
Innovative Strap and Futuristic Inspiration
To complement the redesigned case, the watch includes a distinctive pillow-shaped grey rubber strap. Unlike typical sports straps, this version avoids a conventional athletic look and is secured with a polished dark-grey folding clasp.
For inspiration, Chauhan drew from AI-generated futurist landscapes and a sci-fi film featuring gold space helmets. These influences led to the watch’s bold yet elegant aesthetic, ensuring it stands out while remaining true to the DiaStar’s legacy.
Precision and Craftsmanship
The watch’s stainless-steel case back is coated in polished dark grey metal, with a small sapphire crystal window offering a view of the Rado R764 automatic calibre. Equipped with 25 jewels and an 80-hour power reserve, the timepiece delivers both durability and high performance. Additionally, it boasts 100-meter water resistance.
Continuing Rado’s Legacy of Design Collaborations
Rado has a long history of working with leading creatives, with over 30 collaborations to date. Past projects have included designs by Alfredo Häberli and color-inspired editions by architect Le Corbusier. With Chauhan’s latest reinterpretation, the DiaStar continues to evolve while preserving its pioneering spirit.
