The Downtown Cairo Arts Festival prioritises sustainability

The 10th iteration of the Downtown Cairo Arts Festival, or D-Caf as it is more generally called, will start on October 9. The upcoming festival, which will showcase the creations of more than 20 artists from 10 nations, will have a special emphasis on sustainability.

D-Caf has grown to be one of the most well-liked annual events in the Egyptian capital ten years after it initially started. 10 years, according to co-founder and artistic director Ahmed El Attar, is a significant anniversary for any festival.

El Attar stated that a number of musicians who took part in earlier D-Caf versions are also anticipated to return, and that “there is a great deal of devotion to the festival, not just from the audiences but also from the artists, with whom we keep regularly in touch.”

The festival is divided up into smaller programmes each year, which frequently feature artworks that have a similar theme or use the same media.

The festival wants to spark a discussion about what artists can do to become more conscious of their carbon footprints and to adopt more environmentally friendly creative methods.

The festival’s locations will also have recycling bins this year, according to the organisers.

The Covid-19 outbreak forced the suspension of D-Arab Caf’s Arts Focus programme in 2020, but it will resume this year. The programme aims to support the internationalisation of Arab artists.
