United Nations Peacekeeping is commemorating its 75th anniversary with a unique Inside Out art activation in New York’s iconic Times Square, celebrating the collective efforts towards global peace. Scheduled for 11 a.m. on May 26, the event acknowledges the contributions of United Nations peacekeepers and the communities they serve, working together to establish peace in fragile political and security environments.
The Inside Out Project, initiated by artist JR to empower communities worldwide, has engaged over 500,000 individuals across 149 countries and territories, resulting in more than 2,000 Actions. In 2013, Times Square transformed into an enormous art gallery displaying large-scale photographs of New Yorkers as part of the Project.
For this special occasion, Times Square will once again be adorned with Inside Out’s distinctive black and white posters, featuring portraits of United Nations peacekeepers, community members, and other partners dedicated to peace and progress.
Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, emphasized the extraordinary efforts of UN peacekeepers, ordinary individuals operating in challenging conditions to achieve remarkable outcomes for the communities they serve. Their selfless acts, risking their own lives to save and improve the lives of others, are acknowledged through this exhibition, recognizing their indispensable role in fostering peace in conflict zones worldwide.
Lacroix further expressed that the United Nations is not alone in its endeavors, as numerous partners, including resilient community members, work alongside them, inspiring with their determination to establish lasting peace. This event serves as a tribute to their vital contributions.
The United Nations has launched a year-long global campaign titled “Peace Begins with Me” to honor the service and sacrifices of over two million men and women who have served as peacekeepers under the UN flag since 1948. The Inside Out Action amplifies the voices and shares the stories of these individuals who persevere in the face of adversity.
Times Square Arts Director, Jean Cooney, expressed their honor in hosting United Nations Peacekeeping in Times Square, a space where art and important public dialogue intersect, engaging up to 300,000 people in a single day. This collaboration builds upon their decade-long partnership with JR, the artist behind Inside Out.
Public members are invited to the celebration at Duffy Square in Times Square, where they can have their portraits taken at the Inside Out photo booth. By adding their images to the art installation, they contribute their voices to the call for peace.
The Inside Out art activation in Times Square stands as a powerful testament to the enduring commitment of United Nations Peacekeeping, recognizing their milestone anniversary while highlighting the collective pursuit of peace through art, storytelling, and community engagement.
