W Austin has reopened with a vibrant new identity after a sweeping renovation by Atlanta-based design studio Blur Workshop, in collaboration with Rockwell Group and W Hotels’ in-house team. The transformation includes the hotel’s lobby, 251 guest rooms, 32 suites, public spaces, and dining venues—each now infused with textures, hues, and storytelling that celebrate Austin’s dynamic cultural and natural heritage.

The redesign forms part of a larger rebranding initiative by W Hotels, which includes updates to key properties such as W New York – Union Square and the recent opening of W Budapest.

Inspired by Austin’s Rhythm and Landscape

Blur Workshop drew deep inspiration from Lady Bird Lake, Austin’s famed music festivals, and the city’s creative energy. According to the studio, the concept for the W Austin was to design “a space that reflects the Austin of today—while also embracing the future.” The public areas were imagined as an immersive event experience, with dramatic lighting, layered textures, and striking local art.

Guests are welcomed into a double-height entrance clad in wood paneling with softly rounded corners—a subtle nod to the shape of a guitar. A butterfly-wing patterned rug echoes natural motifs, mirrored in wall art by Jocelyn Marsh titled “Infinity Butterfly Mirrors.”

From the lobby, the space opens into the “Living Room” lounge, described as the hotel’s “headliner” area. Jewel tones dominate here, from a bright orange rug to deep purple accents inspired by Texas sunsets. Pendant lights mimic concert lighters—reimagined today as glowing mobile phone screens.

Eclectic Interiors and Local Touches

One standout feature is the Blue Room, a speakeasy-style lounge adjacent to the Living Room. Inspired by a Steinway piano, this moody enclave is finished in fiddleback mahogany veneer, rich blue suede walls, and black granite floors. It offers a sultry, quiet retreat within the vibrant atmosphere.

Guests then pass into a glass-encased café, distinguished by a sinuous chandelier modeled after a saxophone. The space is framed by a hand-carved walnut wall, adding to its rich, organic feel.

For dining, the hotel’s Serende Restaurant offers a distinctly different identity. Named in honour of Lady Bird Johnson, the restaurant draws inspiration from Texas wildflowers. A “tunnel of flowers” archway made from Kyle Bunting’s leather patchwork art separates it from the lobby. Inside, a mosaic wall with birds and trees and folding glass doors open onto a sunlit patio overlooking Lavaca Street.

Suites and Guest Rooms Reimagined

The hotel’s 251 guest rooms and 32 suites have also been overhauled. Each is “bathed in green,” according to Blur Workshop, to reflect views of the surrounding lake and hills. Rooms feature local art and photography, reinforcing the connection to Austin’s creative scene.

Originally opened in 2010, W Austin is located in downtown Austin, sharing its block with Austin City Limits Live. The proximity to this iconic venue helped guide the renovation’s musical theme.

Following its 2022 acquisition by Ryman Hospitality Properties, the property underwent this major renovation. A redesigned spa and pool area is also in development and expected to open soon.
