Danish design brand &Tradition has introduced Numbra, its first lighting collection by Japanese designer Teruhiro Yanagihara. The series includes the TY1 Pendant and TY3 Portable Lamp, pairing lacquered oak with tumbled aluminium. Together, the designs explore elemental forms through a restrained, tactile aesthetic.
A Linear Study in Light
The Numbra TY1 Pendant centers on the straight line. As a result, its elongated silhouette lends clarity while retaining the warmth of natural wood. In an interior, the pendant functions as a floating focal point. It is particularly suited to dining areas and living spaces, where its quiet profile can define a communal setting without overwhelming it.
Crafted from solid lacquered oak panels and tumbled aluminium fixtures, the TY1 combines several materials within a precise structure. Meanwhile, an acrylic diffuser and stainless steel core produce a soft, dimmable glow. Measuring 122cm in length, the pendant is intended for shared spaces. It uses a 15W LED light source with 700 lumens and a warm 2400K temperature.
Sustainability also informs the construction. The design uses FSC-certified wood and water-based lacquer. In addition, it is designed for disassembly, supporting repair and eventual recycling. This approach reinforces the collection’s emphasis on longevity alongside visual simplicity.
Portable Design for Flexible Interiors
The Numbra TY3 Portable Lamp translates the same design language into a smaller, battery-powered form. Consequently, its compact scale allows it to move between different domestic and outdoor settings. It can sit on a bookshelf or bedside table, for example, before moving to an evening terrace.
Standing at 25.5 cm tall, the TY3 incorporates a three-step dimmer for adjustable illumination. Furthermore, its rechargeable battery provides up to 10 hours of use. A magnetic USB charging system adds another layer of convenience, supporting the lamp’s mobile character.
Like the TY1, the portable lamp combines oak, aluminium and sandblasted acrylic. Therefore, the material palette creates continuity across the Numbra collection while giving each piece a distinct role. Yanagihara’s approach emphasizes material honesty and tactile simplicity rather than decorative excess.
The collection also reflects a broader design interest in adaptable lighting. While the TY1 establishes a visual anchor within communal interiors, the TY3 offers a more intimate source of illumination. Together, they demonstrate how a consistent material language can operate across different scales and uses.
