Zaha Hadid Architects has unveiled the master plan for Khalid Bin Sultan City, a visionary urban development in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. Designed for the Beeah Group, the new city will be located east of Sharjah International Airport, adjacent to the firm’s acclaimed Beeah Headquarters, completed in 2022.
A City Inspired by Nature and Community
The design embraces a sustainable and human-focused approach. At the heart of Khalid Bin Sultan City lies a two-kilometre-long central park, envisioned as a natural spine that weaves through the city. The master plan also includes seven residential neighbourhoods, each featuring organically shaped buildings inspired by the flowing forms of desert dunes.
Every neighbourhood is arranged around its own central public space, with the larger park linking them all. The park will host a rich mix of amenities: sculpture gardens, wildlife ponds, courtyards, cafes, and restaurants, along with running and cycling tracks to support an active lifestyle.
“Rather than revealing itself all at once, this linear oasis unfolds gradually, offering glimpses of what lies ahead and encouraging curiosity and exploration,” stated Zaha Hadid Architects.
Prioritising Sustainability and Walkability
Zaha Hadid Architects emphasised that the city design avoids car-centric planning. Instead, it promotes walkability and environmental harmony. Native trees and colonnades will provide shaded walkways, and water features will help reduce ground temperatures, addressing Sharjah’s desert climate in an eco-conscious way.
“The design cultivates walkability, environmental cohesion and a strong sense of place,” the studio added.
At the northern edge, near the Beeah Headquarters, a cultural centre will anchor a new design and business district. Further into the park, key buildings such as a sports complex, a mosque, and a shopping centre will serve as vibrant community hubs. The city will also include wellness centres and children’s spaces, ensuring a multigenerational living experience.
A Future-Ready Urban Model
Khalid Bin Sultan City aims to become a year-round living environment where residents enjoy direct access to nature and high-quality infrastructure. The project integrates both modern amenities and natural elements to promote health, well-being, and social interaction.
“From landmark destinations such as the contemporary mosque to sheltered sports areas, every element is designed to support the highest quality of life,” said the firm.
This latest announcement follows other major Zaha Hadid Architects projects, including a skyscraper in Tbilisi with cascading terraces and a cultural centre in Italy shaped like a starfish, further reinforcing the studio’s global vision for bold, community-driven design.
