Zaha Hadid Architects has completed the Greater Bay Area Sports Center in Guangzhou, China, a landmark complex integrating a stadium, arena, and aquatics facility. Situated on the western bank of the Pearl River, the center occupies a 70-hectare riverside park and is designed to support both major events and community engagement.

Design Inspired by Maritime Heritage

The architectural forms draw inspiration from the tapered hulls of Song Dynasty sailing ships, connecting the design to the region’s maritime history. Curving structures and chiselled profiles provide climate comfort, with the stadium roof shielding spectators from sun and rain while promoting natural airflow. Outdoor spaces, including running tracks and sports pitches, encourage local recreation and foster community interaction.

Sustainability and First Events

Environmental resilience is embedded throughout the site. Wetlands act as flood protection, while natural ventilation and shaded areas reduce reliance on mechanical cooling. The aquatics facility features a 50-metre pool and diving well for training and competitions. The center will host its first events on December 5, beginning with four sold-out concerts that highlight its versatility as both a sports and cultural venue.
