Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has shared new construction photos of the Greater Bay Area Sports Centre in Guangzhou. The state-of-the-art complex is set to open in June 2025, just in time for the China National Games in November. Located in the Nansha district, it will serve as a key venue for major sporting events while providing facilities for the local community.

Innovative Design Inspired by Maritime Heritage

Designed with Guangdong Architectural Design & Research Institute (GDAD), the 70-hectare complex will be a focal point of the Greater Bay Area. The 60,000-seat stadium features ZHA’s signature flowing architecture, inspired by the region’s maritime history. Its sweeping curves resemble Song dynasty sailing ships, which once made the Pearl River a global trade center.

In addition to the stadium, the complex includes a 20,000-seat basketball arena and a 4,000-seat aquatics center with an Olympic-sized swimming pool and diving platforms. Each venue has been carefully designed to balance functionality with visual appeal.

Sustainable and Climate-Responsive Features

The sports complex incorporates design elements that respond to Guangzhou’s subtropical climate. Shaded outdoor areas and natural ventilation help keep spaces cool while reducing energy use. Vertical louvres on the facades block direct sunlight, keeping interiors comfortable.

The stadium’s roof, inspired by traditional Chinese silk fans, offers protection from rain and harsh sunlight. A large arch in the structure allows sea breezes to pass through while framing scenic views of the river. These design choices enhance both sustainability and spectator comfort.

A Community Hub Beyond Major Events

The Greater Bay Area Sports Centre is not just for large-scale competitions. It will also be open to schools, local sports clubs, and residents. The complex includes training pitches, running tracks, and athlete accommodations, ensuring year-round use.

The surrounding park has been designed to prevent flooding and manage excess water. This green space will further enhance the area’s environmental sustainability.

Completion Timeline and Future Projects

Construction began in August 2023 and is progressing on schedule. The project was commissioned by the Nansha District Bureau of Culture & Sports.

Zaha Hadid Architects, founded in 1979 by Zaha Hadid, continues to lead in innovative architecture. Under Patrik Schumacher’s direction, the firm is working on multiple global projects, including a cultural center in Italy and a new convention center in Beijing.

With its blend of advanced engineering, sustainability, and cultural inspiration, the Greater Bay Area Sports Centre is set to become a major landmark in China’s sporting landscape.
