Zayed International Airport is redefining sustainable infrastructure by integrating modern landscaping solutions with environmental responsibility. Managed by Dorsch Global, the project highlights how airports can incorporate eco-friendly design while maintaining operational efficiency. Through innovative landscaping techniques, it addresses the region’s environmental challenges while enhancing Abu Dhabi’s reputation as a leader in green development.

Zayed Airport: Sustainable Landscaping on a Grand Scale
Spanning 480,000 square meters, the project establishes a new standard for sustainable landscaping in the Middle East. It aims to create a visually striking yet environmentally responsible airport environment. To achieve this, the design focuses on water conservation, using native and local plant species that require less irrigation while enhancing biodiversity. Additionally, solar power systems help reduce overall energy consumption, reinforcing the project’s commitment to sustainability.
Khaled Abbas, Regional Director of Landscape and Client Relationships at Dorsch Abu Dhabi, emphasized the project’s significance:
“This project is more than just a development – it’s a symbol of our commitment to innovation and sustainability. By using local resources and advanced technology, we have set a new benchmark for green infrastructure in the region.”
Innovative Solutions for Environmental Challenges
The landscaping project introduces several key sustainability measures. One of its major achievements is a 50% reduction in water usage, made possible by incorporating volcanic soil sourced from Hungary. This specialized soil retains moisture efficiently, reducing reliance on irrigation. Additionally, the project avoids tapping into groundwater aquifers, ensuring the preservation of these critical resources for future generations.
Further enhancing sustainability, the design incorporates 18-meter-high sand dunes, which not only add aesthetic value but also contribute to water conservation. By carefully selecting local plants suited to the desert climate, the project minimizes water requirements while fostering a resilient ecosystem.
Overcoming Challenges Through Innovation
Executing a large-scale landscaping project near the coast presented unique technical challenges. The high-water table and underground cavities required innovative solutions. Engineers addressed these concerns by integrating retaining walls with plantation features, maintaining both safety and sustainability.
Strong collaboration between Dorsch and its clients played a key role in the project’s success. Open communication and problem-solving helped align decisions with both operational and environmental goals.
“Clients appreciate when their needs are prioritized over profits,” Abbas explained. “By focusing on best practices and innovation, we delivered a sustainable solution that meets their expectations while protecting the environment.”
A Blueprint for Future Developments
The Zayed International Airport Landscaping Project exemplifies how modern infrastructure can harmonize with nature. By incorporating renewable energy, smart irrigation systems, and sustainable materials, it tackles the challenges of extreme weather and water scarcity. More importantly, it provides a replicable model for future developments in arid regions.
For Dorsch Global, this project marks not just a milestone but a commitment to advancing sustainable design. Looking ahead, the firm remains dedicated to integrating cutting-edge technologies that promote long-term environmental resilience.
As Abu Dhabi strengthens its role as a global leader in sustainability, initiatives like this set a powerful precedent. They demonstrate that visionary design and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand, shaping a more sustainable future for the UAE and beyond.
