The Zayed National Museum, the UAE’s flagship institution for national heritage, is calling on researchers worldwide to apply for the 2025 Zayed National Museum Research Fund. With a total allocation of AED 1 million, the fund supports projects that advance understanding and preservation of the UAE’s rich cultural history and the broader region. Applications close on 14 July 2025.

Inspired by the values of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan—the Founding Father of the UAE—the Research Fund encourages ambitious research aimed at preserving and reviving the nation’s heritage. It provides grants for both established scholars and emerging researchers, fostering innovation, knowledge, and cultural resilience.

Empowering Research Rooted in Sheikh Zayed’s Vision

His Excellency Saood Abdulaziz Al Hosani, Undersecretary of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, emphasised the Fund’s role in nurturing knowledge and creativity:
“The UAE has always been a crossroads of cultures and ideas. This Research Fund builds on that legacy, empowering researchers to deepen our understanding of the past and enrich our shared cultural identity. The discoveries made will inspire pride in our youth and help us share our heritage with the world.”

A panel comprising representatives from Zayed National Museum, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, and external experts will evaluate applications based on research methodology, experience, potential outcomes, and alignment with the museum’s mission.

Dr Peter Magee, Director of Zayed National Museum, added:
“The Research Fund supports original scholarship that uncovers the history, heritage, and traditions of the UAE and region. Rooted in Sheikh Zayed’s legacy of education and heritage preservation, these grants play a crucial role in fostering intellectual engagement and a collective identity.”

Focus Areas and Past Research Impact

The Fund prioritises research across several key themes, including:

  • The life and achievements of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan
  • Archaeological and intangible heritage of the UAE
  • History and archaeology of the Arabian Peninsula and South Asia
  • Conferences and invited lectures related to these themes

Since its launch in 2023, the Research Fund has supported 18 diverse projects from countries such as China, Egypt, India, Italy, France, Oman, Poland, UAE, UK, and the USA. Past projects range from studies of Southern and Eastern Arabian rock art to explorations of Sheikh Zayed’s legacy and its cultural impact on UAE society.

Notable past research includes:

  • Ancient DNA analysis revealing regional population history
  • Studies of historical trade routes between India and the Arabian Peninsula
  • Investigations into cultural shifts among Early Bronze Age inhabitants of the Al Ain Oasis

Continuing Sheikh Zayed’s Legacy Through Research and Education

Zayed National Museum is dedicated to preserving the UAE’s story from ancient times to the present through immersive exhibitions, active research, and public programming. The museum embodies Sheikh Zayed’s vision by promoting progress, collaboration, and cultural preservation.

Researchers interested in applying for the 2025 Zayed National Museum Research Fund can find application details and submit their proposals before 14 July 2025 at:
