Design Miami, currently celebrating its 20th anniversary in Miami Beach, has revealed plans to launch its inaugural Dubai edition in early 2027. This expansion is part of a multi-year partnership with Dubai-based cultural enterprise Alserkal, aiming to bring the fair’s international design platform to the Arabian Gulf. The fair also holds an annual edition in Paris, established in 2023, while its longstanding Basel show, launched in 2006, was suspended earlier this year. As a spokesperson explained, “We are considering new and thoughtful ways to expand our platform so we can continue to show up for our international collector base.”
Strategic Timing in the Gulf Art Market
The announcement of Design Miami Dubai follows recent regional developments, including the launch of Art Basel Qatar and Frieze Abu Dhabi in 2026. These moves reflect growing interest from Western art businesses in the Arabian Gulf as a promising market. While full details about participating galleries and the fair’s format will be released closer to the event, leadership is already in place. Vilma Jurkute, executive director of Alserkal, Jennifer Roberts, chief executive of Design Miami, and Jesse Lee, chairman of Design Miami and founder of Basic.Space, will oversee the inaugural edition. A director for the fair will be announced in the coming months.
Year-Round Collaboration and Cultural Impact
Beyond the annual trade show, the partnership will establish a year-round programme of design events, including talks and educational initiatives. Roberts emphasized the importance of the collaboration, stating, “Alserkal has played a crucial role in building and shaping an international creative district in Dubai. Through this partnership, we see a great opportunity to exemplify our shared values and belief that design is a global language.” By combining global expertise with local infrastructure, Design Miami Dubai aims to strengthen Dubai’s position as a hub for international design and creative engagement.
