Italian design house Fornasetti has partnered with luxury rug maker cc-tapis to launch a new collection that transforms iconic Fornasetti motifs into tactile design objects. The collaboration brings together Milanese visual heritage and contemporary textile craftsmanship, translating the brand’s surreal imagery into hand-crafted rugs.
At the center of the project lies a dialogue between illustration and material design. Fornasetti’s signature imagery, originally seen on paper, ceramics and decorative objects, now appears through fiber, knot and weave. As a result, the designs move from flat surfaces into dimensional textile compositions.
Archival imagery reinterpreted in woven form
The collection draws directly from the visual archive established by Piero Fornasetti. Designers have reimagined several historic motifs, including “Re Sole” (Sun King) and “Peccato Originale” (Original Sin), both dating to the 1950s.
Another highlight, “Gattipanni,” combines an illustrated cat with a traditional carpet beater. The design references Fornasetti’s fascination with both everyday household objects and feline imagery. Consequently, the motif captures the playful irony that defines much of the brand’s artistic language.
Meanwhile, artisans craft each rug using premium natural materials such as Himalayan wool, merino wool and silk. Through this process, the visual motifs gain texture and depth while retaining their graphic clarity.
Design objects positioned for collector interiors
Beyond their practical function, the rugs are conceived as composed visual scenes. Each design employs repetition, illusion and surreal humor to engage viewers and shape the atmosphere of interior spaces.
Additionally, the collection spans multiple formats. Some pieces function as large statement rugs that define entire rooms. Others appear as smaller compositions or wall-mounted textile works. Therefore, the collaboration targets collectors who treat contemporary design objects with the same cultural significance as fine art.
The full collection will debut in April across the digital platforms of both Fornasetti and cc-tapis.
