Apple is preparing to introduce an updated version of its entry-level iPad in the first half of 2026, according to reporting by Mark Gurman. The anticipated release is expected to align with the rollout of iOS 26.4, positioning the device within Apple’s broader software and hardware ecosystem refresh.

Hardware upgrade brings AI capabilities to base iPad

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is gearing up to drop a refreshed version of its entry-level iPad in the first half of 2026. The new tablet is expected to touch down within the iOS 26.4 release window, which wraps up in May. With iOS 26.4 already hitting the release candidate stage, the updated iPad could arrive as early as late March, though supply chain variables might push the official launch into April or May.

The most notable update centers on a significant processor upgrade. The biggest flex for the upcoming base iPad is a serious hardware jump from the A16 chip to the A18 processor—the same silicon currently powering the iPhone 16 lineup. As a result, the device is expected to deliver substantial performance improvements while enabling support for Apple Intelligence, the company’s expanding AI ecosystem. Consequently, the base iPad would become the final core product in Apple’s lineup to integrate these capabilities.

In addition, industry speculation suggests the possible inclusion of Apple’s in-house C1 modem and N1 networking chip. Therefore, the update could extend beyond processing power to encompass connectivity and network performance enhancements.

Pricing dynamics reshape entry-level positioning

While the internal refresh guarantees a smoother, faster experience, the base iPad’s pricing dynamic is raising eyebrows in the wake of Apple’s latest hardware reveals. Consumers looking to pair the $349 USD budget tablet with the $249 USD Magic Keyboard Folio are staring down a total cost of $598 USD. That price point sits just one dollar shy of Apple’s newly minted entry-level laptop, the MacBook Neo, prompting renewed scrutiny of value positioning across the brand’s product categories.

Moreover, this pricing overlap highlights a broader shift in how consumers evaluate tablets versus laptops within Apple’s ecosystem. While the iPad remains positioned as a versatile, design-forward device, its expanding capabilities increasingly blur the distinction between mobile and desktop computing.

Release timing and market context

As the expected launch window approaches, the updated iPad reflects Apple’s ongoing strategy of incrementally upgrading core devices while integrating advanced technologies across its lineup. Furthermore, aligning the release with iOS 26.4 ensures immediate compatibility with the latest software features, including AI-driven tools.

Ultimately, the forthcoming release underscores how even entry-level devices are evolving into sophisticated, multi-functional tools. By combining improved hardware with ecosystem-wide integration, Apple continues to redefine expectations for accessible consumer technology.
