Spotify has unveiled a purpose-built listening lounge in London, marking a new step in the platform’s exploration of physical spaces dedicated to sound. Located adjacent to its headquarters, the Spotify Listening Lounge is conceived as an immersive environment designed to prioritize what the company describes as “intentional listening.”
Designing a room around sound
At the core of the project is a holistic approach to acoustics and interior design. Developed in collaboration with CAKE Architecture, the space treats every surface as part of a larger sonic instrument.
Walls are acoustically tuned, while the color palette and materials are carefully calibrated to reduce interference and enhance clarity. According to CAKE founder Hugh Scott Moncrieff, “the project saw them treat the room itself as an instrument,” ensuring that architecture and sound operate in complete harmony.
A sculptural sound system as centerpiece
The focal point of the lounge is an altar-like installation housing a bespoke sound system by Friendly Pressure, led by Shivas Howard-Brown. Constructed from aluminum and crowned with resin horns, the speakers flank a custom console by Eddie Olin. Weighing approximately half a tonne, the installation merges sculptural presence with technical precision. Notably, the system incorporates magnet drivers—components historically used in recordings at Abbey Road Studios during the 1960s through the 1980s—bridging analog heritage with contemporary audio design.

“Growing up in and around recording studios exposed me to a whole heritage of craft,” Howard-Brown said. “Sound systems built in sheds, speakers designed for Carnival stacks – these have always had the same ambition as anything you’d find in a high-end listening room. This new space is my attempt to make that argument.”
Crafting an immersive listening environment
Beyond the sound system, every detail within the lounge reinforces focus and immersion. Furnishings, including low-slung Cassina Soriana armchairs, are positioned to optimize listening angles, while spatial proportions encourage stillness and attentiveness. From its inception in May 2025, the project evolved through close collaboration between Friendly Pressure and CAKE Architecture, ensuring that aesthetic decisions consistently supported acoustic performance.
A new platform for artists and audiences
With the Listening Lounge now complete, Spotify plans to activate the space through year-round programming. The initiative aims to bring audiences closer to artists via intimate sessions, while also showcasing the platform’s advancements in lossless audio technology.
Ultimately, the project reflects a broader industry shift: as digital platforms mature, physical environments are becoming critical spaces for deepening engagement—transforming listening from a passive activity into a deliberate, communal experience.
