Alex Chinneck has unveiled a new series of sculptural installations for Dior, transforming the luxury house’s flagship stores in New York and Los Angeles into immersive environments that blend urban infrastructure, surrealism, and fashion design.
Installed at the Peter Marino-designed House of Dior locations, the projects mark the first anniversary of both flagship spaces while expanding Dior’s ongoing engagement with large-scale contemporary art commissions. Moreover, the installations reinterpret familiar city elements through distorted forms and playful architectural interventions characteristic of Chinneck’s practice.
“Alex Chinneck’s new installations for Dior are gracing the House with some sculptural whimsy.”
Known internationally for public artworks that manipulate perceptions of architecture, Alex Chinneck applies his visual language to the urban identities of both cities. Consequently, the works transform traffic systems, street furniture, and automobiles into sculptural objects, balancing illusion, humour, and theatricality.
New York Installations Reimagine Madison Avenue Through Surreal Urban Forms
At House of Dior New York, Chinneck presents nine site-specific sculptures responding to the visual rhythm and density of Manhattan streets. In addition, the installations merge couture-inspired references with warped infrastructural elements associated with Madison Avenue.
“House of Dior New York plays host to nine new sculptures that reimagine Madison Avenue bustle through a surrealist lens.”

Among the most prominent works is a bouquet-like arrangement of twisted traffic lights illuminated in red, yellow, and green. Elsewhere, street lamps bend into ribbon-like forms inspired by drapery and textile movement, while a yellow taxi appears to soften and collapse against the building’s glass façade.
“Street lamps are “bent in bows to evoke couture ribbons, threads and drapery,” per a statement from Dior.”
The installations extend Dior’s broader strategy of integrating fashion retail, architecture, and contemporary art into immersive experiential environments. Therefore, the flagship space functions simultaneously as a boutique, an exhibition setting, and an urban stage.
Los Angeles Sculptures Explore Car Culture and Cinematic Illusion
The Los Angeles presentation introduces five sculptural interventions responding to the visual culture of Beverly Hills and Southern California. Furthermore, the installations place particular emphasis on automotive design and cinematic imagery associated with the city’s cultural identity.
“Similarly, the Los Angeles iteration taps into the opulence of the boulevard in five works.”
A central work features a red automobile twisted into a complete loop, transforming a symbol of American car culture into an impossible sculptural gesture. Another installation presents a mannequin suspended from a bent streetlight, referencing Hollywood spectacle and fashion display simultaneously.

“In another moment, a mannequin quietly swings from a bent streetlight, channeling the city’s cinematic allure.”
The commissions celebrate Dior’s longstanding relationship with the United States while reinforcing the growing convergence between luxury retail, public art, and immersive installation practice. As a result, Alex Chinneck continues to expand his exploration of distorted urban forms into the context of contemporary fashion architecture.
“Alex Chinneck’s creations are now on view at House of Dior New York and Beverly Hills.”
