NOT A HOTEL AOSHIMA has expanded its beachfront retreat in Miyazaki with two new villas, CHILL 2.0 and COAST.
Designed by Shin Ohori of GENERAL DESIGN, the new residences continue the architectural language of the resort’s original buildings. At the same time, the expanded property introduces new public spaces, including a skateboard park and landscaped green areas.
Together, these additions strengthen the retreat’s connection to Aoshima’s lush subtropical setting. They also expand the resort beyond private accommodation into a broader lifestyle destination.
CHILL 2.0 frames the Pacific horizon
CHILL 2.0 develops the concept behind the resort’s original “house of the horizon”. The third-level maisonette is designed to take full advantage of expansive Pacific Ocean views and can accommodate up to six guests.
Two ocean-facing bedrooms open directly onto a shared terrace. From there, guests can take in the sea breeze and uninterrupted coastal views.
The outdoor area centers on a 21-meter infinity pool, which expands on the original CHILL design. Its edge visually merges with the Pacific horizon, creating a continuous relationship between architecture, water, and landscape.
Nearby, a floating outdoor living area features a sunken sofa and fireplace. Meanwhile, a connected bath, sauna, and cold plunge create a continuous wellness sequence beside the pool.
COAST combines pool and private garden
The second addition, COAST, occupies the first and second floors of the property as a duplex for up to four guests.
Set directly on the oceanfront, the residence combines elements from the earlier “SURF” and “GARDEN” suites. Consequently, it offers both a private pool and a secluded garden.
One of COAST’s four units is also pet-friendly, allowing guests to stay with dogs.
Inside, the living room features 3.2-meter-high ceilings. The generous vertical volume creates a sense of openness while strengthening the connection to the surrounding tropical landscape.
Aoshima develops into a beach community
CHILL 2.0 and COAST join the recently renewed ocean-facing LDK restaurant, designed by Ryu Kosaka of A.N.D.
Together, the new villas, restaurant, and expanded public spaces position NOT A HOTEL AOSHIMA as more than a collection of private residences. Instead, the additions create a more complete beachfront environment shaped around accommodation, recreation, wellness, and landscape.
With GENERAL DESIGN maintaining visual continuity across the new architecture, the expansion also reinforces the resort’s relationship with Aoshima’s subtropical character.
