New York-based design studio Manhattan Projects NYC (MPNYC) has unveiled a striking new interior for Koumkan, a restaurant in Athens, Greece. Commissioned by Dakis Joannou, a renowned entrepreneur and art collector, the renovation embraces postmodern design principles fused with metaverse-inspired aesthetics, creating an immersive and surreal dining environment.

A Grand Entrance and Mirror-Enhanced Foyer
The journey into Koumkan begins with a monumental travertine portal leading to a mirrored entryway, hinting at the kaleidoscopic interiors beyond. Inside, a rose-hued foyer features book-matched travertine walls, paired with mirrors that create an illusory sense of expansion. The rich, wall-to-wall carpeting adds warmth and depth to the ambiance.
A Dramatic Marble Parlor and High-Tech Lighting
Through a concealed mirror door, guests enter the parlor, a space wrapped in green marble from the Greek island of Tinos. This luxurious stone envelops high-top banquettes, shelves, a DJ booth, bar, and footrests, forming a visually striking environment.
Vintage 1960s stainless steel sconces, shaped like flutes, softly illuminate the marble surfaces, complemented by a custom horizontal chandelier above the bar.
The Grande Salle: An Immersive Lounge and Dining Space
The heart of Koumkan is the Grande Salle, a multi-functional area that seamlessly merges a cocktail bar, lounge, and restaurant. Vertical mirrors stretch the space upward, amplifying the ambient glow of integrated lighting. The seating arrangement includes curvilinear benches upholstered in pink moiré fabric, plush rounded armchairs, and round marble tables, creating an intimate yet futuristic aesthetic. Lush tropical plants further connect the interiors with the surrounding outdoor spaces.
The Veranda: A Sunlit Indoor-Outdoor Retreat
Blurring the lines between interior and exterior, the veranda links the restaurant to the pool deck, offering semi-sheltered lounge spaces bathed in natural light. Pink terracotta walls and travertine tiles arranged in a herringbone pattern diffuse sunlight into the cave-like alcove, fostering a tranquil atmosphere. Polished chrome chairs and thick-columned tables, reminiscent of 1950s Mediterranean Riviera design, contrast with the soft, earthy tones, adding a dynamic metallic sheen to the palette.
With its bold postmodern execution, immersive lighting, and rich material contrasts, MPNYC’s Koumkan reinvention transforms the dining experience into a cinematic journey. The project stands as a testament to the power of visionary design, seamlessly blending tradition, innovation, and high-concept aesthetics.
