Zaha Hadid Architects has revealed designs for the Centre of Mediterranean Culture, a cultural hub currently under construction on Italy’s southern coast in Reggio Calabria. Inspired by its marine setting, the building features a fluid, round-edged form that mirrors the radial symmetry of a starfish. Reflective aluminum panels and rounded roof openings will enhance its organic aesthetic.

A Key Addition to the Reggium Waterfront
Positioned along the Strait of Messina, the centre is a key element in the city’s broader Reggium Waterfront redevelopment. Once completed, the 24,000-square-meter venue will serve as a cultural focal point, hosting exhibitions, events, and public forums. The project aims to deepen the connection between Calabria and the Mediterranean Sea, a relationship that has shaped the region’s history and future.
The design includes landscaped courtyards that wind around the structure, offering shaded outdoor areas for visitors. Inside, four wings will extend from a central atrium, housing galleries, an auditorium, an aquarium, conference spaces, educational areas, and leisure facilities such as a bookshop and restaurant.
Sinuous Interiors Inspired by the Sea
The interior design reflects the surrounding marine environment, featuring curved elements and raised walkways that connect upper levels. The auditorium will incorporate coral-inspired hues, emphasizing the rich biodiversity of the Mediterranean.
Sustainability is a core focus of the project. Sixty native plant species will be integrated into the courtyards, irrigated using a rainwater collection system. The building’s anodized aluminum cladding will reduce heat gain, lowering cooling demands.
Blending Architecture, Nature, and Sustainability
The Centre of Mediterranean Culture is designed to harmonize with its coastal surroundings while promoting sustainability. Passive cooling strategies, hybrid ventilation, and water management systems will enhance efficiency and visitor comfort.
As part of its global portfolio, Zaha Hadid Architects recently completed a copper-colored convention center in Beijing and announced plans for a major housing project in Bristol. The Centre of Mediterranean Culture further cements the firm’s reputation for innovative, site-responsive architecture.
