Architecture studio Atelier Apeiron has unveiled the Hengqin Culture and Art Complex in Zhuhai, China. This 142,560-square-meter landmark brings together a library, theatre, and museum under one roof. A terraced garden tops the structure, seamlessly blending with the surrounding landscape.

Located beside a park and surrounded by residential towers, the complex unifies three cultural institutions. The design gradually steps down from 36 meters to 24 meters, creating a cascading terrace that enhances its connection to the waterfront.
A Multi-Functional Rooftop for the Community by Atelier
The stacked terraces offer three distinct platforms, each serving a purpose. The lowest level features a children’s theme park with sand pits, play areas, restaurants, and cafés. The middle terrace provides staff canteens and garden spaces, offering a peaceful retreat for employees and visitors.
Two spiral staircases lead to the top level, where a bamboo garden forms part of a rainwater collection system. This rooftop design not only fosters community engagement but also supports sustainability.
Iconic Arches Define the Structure by Atelier
At ground level, three grand arches mark the entrances to different cultural halls. According to lead architect Yunchao Xu, these arches represent a timeless architectural form, seen in both Eastern and Western traditions. Beyond aesthetics, they strengthen the structure by efficiently distributing weight.
Each arch leads to a unique space. The Knowledge Hall, marked by the tallest arch, houses a library. The Performance Hall, located at the center, features a large open stage and a black box theatre for dance, music, and opera performances. The Exhibition Hall, defined by circular skylights, showcases art and science exhibitions.
Blending Warm Interiors with Natural Light
Inside, arched ceilings are lined with wood and bamboo panels, creating a warm atmosphere. Large skylights flood the interiors with natural light, reducing reliance on artificial illumination.
The waterfront façade features a cantilevered roof that shelters a sunken semicircular plaza. This space serves as both a public stage and an event venue, hosting weddings, concerts, and corporate gatherings.
“Our vision is to create a vibrant, three-dimensional vertical city that attracts millions of tourists while serving as a cultural hub for local residents,” Xu explained.
A Visionary Addition to China’s Architectural Landscape
Founded in 2009, Atelier Apeiron is a Shenzhen-based firm and a subsidiary of the Shenzhen General Institute of Architectural Design and Research. The Hengqin Culture and Art Complex adds to China’s growing collection of iconic structures.
Recently, Zaha Hadid Architects completed Beijing’s largest convention center, featuring copper-colored fluid forms. Meanwhile, Aedas designed an infinity loop-shaped museum in Hangzhou.
This latest project by Atelier Apeiron blends tradition, innovation, and sustainability, further cementing Zhuhai’s cultural significance on the global stage.
