Land Rover has unveiled its latest rally-raid contender, the Defender Dakar D7X-R, a high-performance prototype set to compete in the 2026 Dakar Rally and the World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC). After undergoing rigorous testing in Morocco’s harsh desert environment, this purpose-built vehicle signals the brand’s serious commitment to off-road motorsport excellence.
The Defender Dakar D7X-R retains many of the rugged features from its production counterpart, including the D7x aluminum body and driveline, but with significant modifications for competitive rally performance. Under the hood, the prototype boasts a 4.4L twin-turbo V8 engine, ensuring the necessary power and reliability to tackle the harsh conditions of the rally.
A Star-Studded Driver Lineup
To pilot the Defender Dakar D7X-R, Land Rover has secured the talents of two formidable drivers. Stéphane Peterhansel, a legendary figure in Dakar history with 14 wins under his belt, joins the team alongside rising star Rokas Baciuška from Lithuania. The duo will lead Land Rover’s debut rally campaign, which will see a three-car lineup at Dakar and a two-car effort for the remainder of the 2026 W2RC season.
James Barclay, Managing Director of JLR Motorsport, expressed his excitement: “This is a huge milestone. Stéphane brings unmatched experience, and Rokas is one of the brightest young talents in the sport.”
Testing and Future Plans
Currently wrapped in camouflage for its test phase, the Defender Dakar D7X-R has completed its first desert tests across the challenging dunes of the Sahara, showcasing the prototype’s off-road prowess. Land Rover plans to give the world a full debut later this year, ahead of the high-profile Dakar Rally in January 2026.
