The highly anticipated Zayed National Museum will officially open its doors in December 2025, marking a major milestone for the Saadiyat Cultural District. Designed by Foster + Partners, the museum will join a prestigious group of institutions including the Louvre Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena, and the upcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.

Architectural homage to heritage and environment

The museum’s architecture is striking and symbolic. Its five soaring steel towers—shaped like falcon wings—pay tribute to the cultural importance of falconry in the UAE. These towers are more than just symbolic: each one functions as a solar thermal chimney, naturally ventilating the building by drawing out hot air. Beneath them, a landscaped garden will trace the timeline of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s life, offering a journey through the UAE’s founding history.

The main exhibition spaces are embedded into a sculpted earthen mound, reflecting the Emirates’ desert topography. Inside, the museum will house six permanent galleries and a temporary exhibition space, narrating the UAE’s environmental, cultural, and social development.

Honouring Sheikh Zayed’s vision

Commissioned to honour the UAE’s Founding Father, the museum extends across two levels and will host exhibitions, public programmes, and research initiatives. Highlights include rare artefacts from the UAE’s earliest human settlements, a reconstruction of the ancient Magan Boat, the Blue Quran manuscript, and the renowned Abu Dhabi Pearl—one of the world’s oldest natural pearls.

“The museum is a reflection of Sheikh Zayed’s values,” said the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi. “It not only preserves the past but also promotes education and cultural exchange.”

A cultural anchor for the future

Located within one of the world’s densest clusters of cultural institutions, the museum supports a wider strategy to grow the UAE’s creative economy. Its permanent exhibitions will span themes such as archaeology, biodiversity, urban development, and Emirati traditions. These narratives connect local heritage with global issues, encouraging visitors to explore the UAE’s evolving identity.

Importantly, the museum will include inclusive spaces for youth, seniors, and People of Determination, ensuring accessibility for all. By combining cutting-edge sustainability with rich storytelling, the Zayed National Museum will stand as a powerful symbol of national pride and a beacon of cultural dialogue.
