Mercedes-Benz has celebrated the production of its 600,000th G-Class, marking a historic moment for the luxury off-road vehicle. The milestone unit is an all-electric G 580 with EQ Technology, finished in Obsidian Black Metallic, and was assembled at the brand’s factory in Graz, Austria.
This production feat not only highlights the enduring popularity of the G-Class but also signals the model’s transition into the era of sustainable mobility. Since its debut in 1979, the G-Class has maintained its rugged DNA while evolving into a global status symbol.
Balancing Heritage and Innovation
Although originally created as a utilitarian workhorse, the G-Class has transformed dramatically over the decades. Its unmistakable design—defined by its ladder frame, circular headlights and full locking differentials—remains intact. Yet, with each generation, Mercedes-Benz has layered in luxury and high-tech upgrades.
Today, the model continues to uphold its off-road credentials while embracing modern demands. The introduction of the electric G 580 exemplifies how the brand balances tradition with forward-looking innovation. Furthermore, Mercedes-Benz has consistently introduced special editions that honour the model’s heritage, including the STRONGER THAN THE 1980s variant, a tribute to the early W 460 series.
Unmatched Customisation and Cult Status
In recent years, customisation has played a key role in the G-Class’s success. Over 90 percent of customers now personalise their vehicles through the MANUFAKTUR programme. This bespoke service offers more than 20,000 paint combinations, reinforcing the G-Class’s reputation for individuality.
The growing cult status of the G-Class shows no signs of slowing down. Even as Mercedes-Benz pivots to electric mobility, the G-Class continues to represent durability, authenticity, and personal expression. With the 600,000th unit now completed, the model stands as a testament to how legacy and innovation can coexist seamlessly.
