The Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC) and the Ministry of Education (MoE) have launched Advanced Technology Pioneers (ATP), a national competition that invites university students and recent graduates across the UAE to develop working prototypes to address real-world challenges set by leading national organizations.
Delivered as part of the National Science, Technology and Innovation (NSTI) Festival, the initiative is designed to connect emerging technical talent with challenges that are directly relevant to the UAE. Rather than focusing solely on concepts, participants are expected to turn their technical knowledge into practical, working solutions.
The inaugural competition features three challenge tracks developed by national organizations operating across tourism, energy, and connectivity.
Three Challenges Connect Students With Industry
The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) is challenging participants to examine how changes in aviation supply can influence hotel guest numbers. Teams will be asked to develop a scenario simulator that links aviation dynamics to tourism demand.
The Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC) has introduced a challenge focused on the sustainable management of seasonal jellyfish blooms at coastal facilities. Participants are expected to develop approaches that protect marine ecosystems while also supporting operational resilience.
EDGE Group is addressing seamless connectivity between Wi-Fi, 5G, satellite, and wired networks. Its challenge asks teams to design mechanisms that maintain quality of service as users transition between connectivity technologies.

Developing people with the skills and experience to help shape the future is crucial in staying relevant in the technology field. Advanced Technology Pioneers is an initiative that tries to directly align emerging talent with the Abu Dhabi’s strategic technology priorities. By challenging emerging talent to deliver working solutions for leading national organisations, we are aiming to strengthen national capabilities, accelerate the transition from education to industry, and support in building the skilled workforce that underpins a competitive knowledge economy which in turn helps advance Abu Dhabi’s position as one of the global centers for advanced technology, innovation, and research.”
The competition is open to teams of three to four members. University students studying at bachelor’s and master’s levels can participate, as can graduates who completed their studies within the previous two years.
Teams can be formed across UAE universities or through ATRC’s national platform for industry-led innovation challenges, ChallengeON. Participants will also receive mentorship from subject-matter experts throughout the challenge period.
Prototypes Take Centre Stage at NSTI Festival
Applications for Advanced Technology Pioneers are being accepted until 11 October 2026. The selected finalists will take their completed prototypes to the NSTI Festival in November 2026, where one winning team will be chosen from each of the three challenge tracks.
Each winning team will receive AED 50,000, with a cash prize allocated for each track. Beyond the financial award, winners will gain access to internship pathways, invitations to national and international technology and innovation events, and continued visibility among prospective employers across the participating organizations.
The structure of ATP places practical development at the center of the competition, giving participants the opportunity to work on challenges defined by organizations operating in strategically important areas.
The initiative also forms part of ATRC’s broader talent enablement efforts to develop a sustainable pipeline of advanced technology talent for Abu Dhabi and the UAE.
ATRC says its talent enablement initiatives have engaged more than 40,000 students to date. These programs have provided opportunities for young people to gain exposure to advanced science and technology, build practical skills, and connect with the UAE’s research and innovation ecosystem.
Through Advanced Technology Pioneers, this wider talent pipeline is being extended into direct industry-led challenges, giving emerging technical talent an opportunity to apply their education to practical problems while building experience relevant to the advanced technology sector.
