Dubai’s skyline is dominated by enormous fridge magnets in a new digital film piece

A new audiovisual project called Meta Souvenir has given Dubai’s skyline yet another artistic makeover. It overlays some of the most recognizable locations in the emirate with digital art “souvenirs,” adding colour and intrigue.

The film was created by Rohith Jagadisha, whose earlier work depicting Dubai’s skyline being engulfed by enormous origami creatures quickly gained widespread attention.

Rohith spent 13 years working in Dubai even though he now resides in India. His time with his 7-year-old daughter Vipanchi visiting the city’s attractions, particularly in the midst of the Covid-19 outbreak, served as the source of inspiration for the two skyline projects.

A sequence of sites is displayed in the film along with letters that spell out “DUBAI.” It opens with a projected image of the Burj Al Arab looking cartoonish over the Dubai coastline with the letter D in the background. Moving on, a stylized camel and oasis scene is depicted on a U that towers over the desert. B is seated behind the gleaming Burj Khalifa, A is in front of Emirates Towers, and I am straddling the city’s famed “twisty” Cayan Tower and Atlantis, The Palm.

The video ends with sequences that rearrange the landmarks in various ways to spell out “I adore Dubai.”
