Gavin Zeigler emerges as a multifaceted artist whose creative journey is deeply rooted in his upbringing and diverse artistic training. Hailing from Franklin, Tennessee, Zeigler’s early artistic development was nurtured under the guidance of the late Walter Bunn Gray, setting the foundation for his future endeavours in art.

Zeigler’s artistic education took him on a journey across various prestigious institutions, starting with a scholarship at the Atlanta College of Art and later pursuing a certificate in graphic design at Pratt Institute in NYC. His quest for artistic enrichment led him to attain an undergraduate degree in Art History from Fordham University in NYC, where he further honed his understanding of the artistic landscape.

In 2006, Zeigler embarked on a transformative journey, undertaking an intensive three-month woodworking course at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine. This experience marked a pivotal moment in his artistic evolution, expanding his repertoire and providing him with the technical skills necessary to explore new dimensions in his practice.

As a contemporary abstractionist in both painting and sculpture, Zeigler draws inspiration from everyday objects, such as coins, obsolete stock certificates, keys, and old bank checks. These items serve as the foundation for his mixed-media paintings, where the act of discovery plays a central role in the creative process. Photography also plays a significant role in Zeigler’s work, often serving as a starting point for his mixed-media paintings, adding layers of depth and complexity to his compositions.

In his sculptural work, Gavin Zeigler utilizes wood, particularly mahogany, as his primary medium, crafting intricate forms that are later cast into limited-edition bronzes. This fusion of traditional and contemporary techniques allows Zeigler to explore the intersection of craftsmanship and artistic expression, resulting in works that are both visually captivating and conceptually rich.

Zeigler’s artwork has garnered widespread acclaim and recognition, with his pieces being featured in public and private collections across the United States and Europe. Notable institutions such as the Telfair Museum’s Jepson Center for Contemporary Art in Savannah, Georgia, and the US Court of Appeals in Atlanta, Georgia, have acquired his works for permanent display, cementing his status as a prominent figure in the contemporary art world.

In essence, Gavin Zeigler’s artistic practice is a testament to his relentless pursuit of creativity and innovation. Through his eclectic blend of materials, techniques, and inspirations, Zeigler invites viewers to embark on a journey of exploration and discovery, where the ordinary is transformed into the extraordinary, and the familiar becomes imbued with new meaning and significance.
