Irene Pérez, born in Santander in 1996, is a young visual artist who holds a degree in Fine Arts from the Universidad del Basque Country UPV/EHU, earned in 2018. Through her artwork, Irene Pérez presents a psychological portrait of society. Using both figurative and abstract styles, she delves into the hidden realities that reside within each individual, the emotions and experiences that often remain unexpressed. Themes such as depression, anxiety, and frustration are explored through textured compositions, accompanied by realistic figures that serve as portraits of the viewers themselves. This approach aims to make visible the imperceptible aspects of our existence, shedding light on the necessary yet often challenging emotions and situations that contribute to personal growth and learning.
“We need to fall to gain momentum up, so why would we hide something so extraordinarily catastrophic?” Irene questions, inviting us to embrace and confront the less favorable aspects of our lives.
Her work primarily focuses on the distortion of portraits, altering anatomical features and destroying traditional facial structures. Irene Perez’s artistic style is characterized by bold brushstrokes and a profound expressiveness. She goes beyond the physical representation of her subjects, aiming to reveal the constant pressure of an uneasy conscience. Through the alteration of reality and anatomy, she draws attention to the inner world of the viewer, encouraging introspection and exploration.
In her most recent series, Irene explores the symbolism of the man in a suit as a representation of success. She challenges the notion that achieving a different position or status will automatically free us from negative emotions and feelings. Irene emphasizes that even successful individuals, those who are powerful and influential, still experience the same range of emotions and vulnerabilities as anyone else.
Currently residing in Madrid, Irene continues her artistic practice in her studio, “Espacio Oculto” (Hidden Space), producing thought-provoking works that invite viewers to reflect on their own psychological landscapes and the complexities of human existence.
