Isobelle Ouzman, a talented artist originally from Leeds, UK, has found her artistic niche in the world of Altered Books. After relocating to the USA as a teenager, Isobelle graduated from Tacoma School of the Arts in Washington State in 2010. While her formal education included studies in illustration, painting, and photography, she didn’t pursue a college degree due to resource constraints. Instead, she delved into the screen printing industry, where she gained valuable experience for many years. However, major life changes in 2020 led Isobelle to take a leap of faith and dedicate herself full-time to her passion for creating Altered Books.
Isobelle’s journey into Altered Books began around 2012 when she stumbled upon a box of water-damaged novels. Fascinated by the possibilities, she started experimenting with transforming these discarded books into unique works of art. As someone who has always cherished books and found solace within their pages, Isobelle saw this art form as a way to express her love for literature in a whole new way. Working with reclaimed materials presents her with a creative challenge, allowing her to give these objects a fresh narrative and breathe new life into them.
With a deep passion for storytelling through imagery, Isobelle finds joy in using paper as her medium of choice. She believes that stories hold immense value and can help us overcome life’s challenges. Each piece she creates is a heartfelt portrayal of a tale, and she pours her artistic vision and dedication into every artwork.
Currently, Isobelle Ouzman takes requests for Altered Books and illustrations while also dedicating time to her personal projects, creating videos, and offering classes to share her knowledge and techniques. Her artistic journey is a testament to following one’s passion and finding innovative ways to express creativity.
