Joshua Vides has brought his immersive art installation, Check Engine Light, to New York City, converting the Morton Street Partners garage into a visually striking, black-and-white mechanic’s workshop. Known for his signature sketch-style aesthetic, Vides reimagines everyday tools, tires, and vehicles as cartoon-like sculptures that blur the line between utility and art.

After debuting in Los Angeles, this latest iteration continues to explore themes of craftsmanship, aspiration, and automotive culture. However, the New York version introduces several new elements, including a custom-painted limousine at its core. The space also features stylized foam tires, racing hoods, and limited-edition acrylic tools, each presented in Vides’ stark monochrome palette. These additions elevate the show’s impact, transforming the garage into a surreal, immersive environment.

An Artistic Study in Car Culture and Creativity

Produced in collaboration with Cart Dept and No More Rulers, the exhibit goes beyond visual appeal. It delves into the intersection of art and consumer culture while reflecting on how everyday objects can be elevated through reinterpretation. To complement the physical display, Vides has released a limited-edition zine and print through No More Rulers’ Capturing Creativity series.

The zine offers an intimate look into the artist’s creative process. It features studio snapshots, moodboards, and behind-the-scenes visuals that provide valuable context for the exhibit. Meanwhile, the accompanying print, limited to just 220 signed units, acts as a tangible keepsake. Both the zine and the print are available for $200 USD on No More Rulers’ official website.

Live Engagements Add Depth to the Experience

To further connect with audiences, Vides has scheduled interactive programming during the exhibition’s run. He recently participated in a live conversation with acclaimed artist Eric Haze, moderated by multidisciplinary creative Set Free. Additionally, Vides is conducting a live painting session today, offering visitors a rare opportunity to witness his artistic process in action.

Check Engine Light is now open at Morton Street Partners in New York and will run through May 6. This exhibition not only redefines the gallery experience but also invites viewers to rethink the everyday through a bold artistic lens.
