In a striking new collaboration, British-Ghanaian designer Kusheda Mensah has partnered with Swedish furniture brand Hem to launch the Palma Pouf collection—her first project with the label. Drawing from naturally occurring forms and grounded in the designer’s philosophy of functional sculpture, the three-part pouf series invites users to interact, connect, and unwind together. The collection will debut next week at 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen and is now available on Hem.com.
Inspired by the Human Body and Natural Shapes
The Palma Pouf collection builds on Mensah’s earlier body of work, particularly her acclaimed “Mutual I” series, where pieces were sculpted to encourage physical closeness and open dialogue. As with “Mutual I,” each Palma piece is influenced by organic forms—including contours of the human body—and balances art and utility.
“This moment is my vision board brought to life,” said Mensah. “It’s my debut at 3DD and a real milestone in my journey as a Black woman in design.”
Palma comprises three sculptural modules, all upholstered and shaped for perching, lounging, and reclining. Designed to support multiple users simultaneously, each form facilitates inward-facing seating, subtly nudging people toward intimacy and communication—whether arranged as individual pieces or combined in a larger formation.
Materials, Presentation, and Creative Vision
Available in Kvadrat textiles, boucle, and leather finishes, the Palma poufs offer a soft, textural experience while delivering high-concept functionality. The diverse upholstery options underscore Hem’s focus on customisation and long-lasting material quality.
Speaking about the collaboration, Hem founder and CEO Petrus Palmér remarked:
“Kusheda’s work was an instant love affair; rigorous research and playful spirit made for a paw-like pouf that makes us smile every time.”
The partnership represents Hem’s ongoing commitment to nurturing emerging international talent while pushing the boundaries of furniture design. The Palma Pouf is now available for purchase via Hem.com, with prices starting at €799 (approx. $899 USD).
