Chinese multimedia artist Lu Yang has unveiled DOKU The Illusion at Espace Louis Vuitton Venezia during the 61st Venice Biennale. Presented as part of the Fondation Louis Vuitton Hors-les-murs programme, the exhibition introduces the latest evolution of the artist’s ongoing DOKU universe, an expansive digital narrative exploring identity, consciousness, and virtual existence.
At the centre of the project is DOKU, a recurring virtual avatar modelled on Lu Yang’s own face. However, rather than functioning as a self-portrait, the figure operates as a mutable digital entity navigating the intersections of spirituality, artificial intelligence, and posthuman identity.
Cybernetic Installation Blends AI, Film, and Buddhist Symbolism
The Venice exhibition transforms the gallery into an immersive environment combining sculpture, moving image, and reflective architecture. Visitors enter a space defined by mirrored surfaces, illuminated installations, and a large-scale LED screen presenting a newly commissioned film.
The film merges live-action footage with AI-generated imagery captured across Japan’s Izu Peninsula, creating a fragmented visual landscape that oscillates between physical and simulated realities. Consequently, the installation extends Lu Yang’s long-standing investigation into how technology reshapes human perception and spiritual experience.

Buddha sculptures positioned throughout the exhibition hold the wheel of life, directly referencing Buddhist cosmology and cycles of rebirth. Therefore, the work connects advanced digital aesthetics with philosophical questions surrounding reincarnation, mortality, and transformation.
Although Lu Yang frequently draws visual inspiration from anime, manga, and gaming culture, these references function primarily as formal and symbolic languages rather than nostalgic pop-cultural citations. Instead, the artist uses hyperreal animation and digital world-building to construct speculative environments where identity becomes fluid and continuously reconstructed.
Fondation Louis Vuitton Continues Biennale-Era Programming
The exhibition forms part of the Fondation Louis Vuitton’s global Hors-les-murs initiative, which activates international Fondation Louis Vuitton exhibition spaces through site-specific contemporary art projects. Timed to coincide with the Venice Biennale, DOKU The Illusion further reinforces the growing relationship between immersive media art and major international exhibition platforms.
Within the context of the Biennale’s broader exploration of technology, migration, and global culture, Lu Yang’s presentation introduces a distinctly cyber-spiritual perspective. Moreover, the exhibition positions digital avatars not merely as technological tools but as contemporary vessels for philosophical inquiry.
As immersive art continues to expand across museums and institutional programming worldwide, DOKU The Illusion highlights how artists are increasingly combining AI, film, and installation to rethink the boundaries between physical presence and digital consciousness.
DOKU The Illusion remains on view at Espace Louis Vuitton Venezia throughout the Biennale period.
