Maison Margiela has officially unveiled its long-anticipated “Line 2,” a concept dedicated to artistic and cultural collaborations rather than traditional fashion products. The launch marks a significant step in the brand’s shift toward cultural engagement, debuting tomorrow at Frieze Seoul.
Art of the Intangible Installation
The inaugural Line 2 project, titled Art of the Intangible, brings together visual artist Heemin Chung and sound designer Joyul. The collaborative installation, housed at Maison Margiela’s flagship store in Seoul, delivers a multisensory experience that merges fashion, art, and environment. Timed to coincide with the Frieze international contemporary art fair, it serves as a statement of intent for the brand’s evolving creative direction.
Maison Margiela’s iconic numbered system has historically defined its product categories, from ready-to-wear to fragrances. Until now, the number “2” remained unused. Its new role signifies a redefinition of the brand’s identity and signals a deliberate expansion into cultural storytelling.
Building Community Through Culture
CEO Gaetano Sciuto explained the philosophy behind the launch, highlighting the intent to build deeper bonds with audiences. He described Line 2 as a means to “go beyond purchasing” and foster “connection” and “community.” This fresh approach reflects a broader vision where Maison Margiela positions itself as an active participant in the global art and culture dialogue rather than a label limited to apparel.
Maison Margiela Line 2 officially makes its debut at Frieze Seoul on September 2, cementing its commitment to exploring the intangible side of fashion through community-driven cultural projects.
