The Mori Art Museum has announced Mariko Mori: All That Shines, a major retrospective celebrating more than three decades of the internationally acclaimed Japanese artist’s career. Opening on October 31, 2026, and running through March 28, 2027, the exhibition marks Mori’s first major institutional retrospective in Japan since Pure Land at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in 2002.
Bringing together approximately 40 works, the exhibition traces Mori’s artistic evolution from her early critiques of contemporary society in the 1990s to immersive installations that investigate consciousness, spirituality, and humanity’s relationship with science and technology. The presentation also highlights her multidisciplinary practice across photography, video, drawing, sculpture, and interactive environments.
Three Decades of Multimedia Innovation
The retrospective examines how Mori’s practice has consistently merged technological experimentation with ancient philosophical ideas, creating works that explore interconnectedness, cosmology, and human perception.
Visitors will encounter early performance-based video pieces, including Miko No Inori (1996), alongside landmark installations such as Wave UFO (1999–2002). Widely recognized as the first artwork to incorporate a functional brainwave biofeedback interface within a fiberglass vision dome, Wave UFO remains one of Mori’s most influential immersive installations.

Furthermore, the exhibition demonstrates the artist’s ongoing interest in blending scientific research with experiential art, offering audiences insight into the conceptual development of her practice over more than 30 years.
Science, Nature and Cosmic Phenomena Shape the Exhibition
Among the featured works is Tom Na H-iu (2006), an interactive sculptural installation that connects to astrophysical data to convert real-time neutrino emissions from supernova explosions into pulses of light. The work reflects Mori’s continuing exploration of the relationship between scientific discovery and artistic expression.

In addition, the retrospective presents photographic documentation of monumental site-specific projects, including Primal Rhythm: Sun Pillar (2011) and Ring: One with Nature (2016). Both installations align with the celestial geometry of the winter solstice sun, reinforcing recurring themes of nature, cosmology, and universal interconnectedness throughout Mori’s oeuvre.
By bringing together historical works and later large-scale installations, Mariko Mori: All That Shines offers a comprehensive overview of one of Japan’s most internationally recognized contemporary artists while examining the enduring dialogue between art, technology, and spirituality.
