Najat Alshejni, a self-taught Yemeni artist based in the UAE, has emerged as a poignant voice in the art world, channelling her profound longing for her homeland into captivating artworks that resonate with viewers profoundly and emotionally.
Alshejni’s journey as an artist is deeply intertwined with her Yemeni heritage. Drawing inspiration from her childhood memories and cultural roots, her artwork serves as a visual diary, capturing the essence of Yemen through vibrant colours, intricate patterns, and symbolic imagery. Despite growing up in various countries due to her father’s diplomatic career, Alshejni has maintained a steadfast connection to Yemen, infusing her art with nostalgia and longing for her homeland.
Born in Sana’a, Yemen, Alshejni’s early years were marked by a nomadic lifestyle, constantly moving from one place to another. However, during her high school years in Rome, Italy, her passion for art took root. Although unable to pursue formal art education then, she continued to nurture her artistic talents while studying International Relations and later supporting her husband’s career across the Middle East.
Throughout her journey, art remained a constant passion for Alshejni. She attended workshops, experimented with different mediums, and curated her art collection while dreaming of one day turning her passion into a profession. In 2022, upon returning to the UAE, she embarked on a new chapter in her life, dedicating herself fully to her art.
Alshejni’s artistic endeavours culminated in the exhibition of her “Yemen Nostalgia” series at Tashkeel in 2023, marking the beginning of her professional career as an artist. Through her evocative artworks, she invites viewers to immerse themselves in the landscapes, scents, and emotions of Yemen, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry of her homeland.
Central to Alshejni’s artistic vision is her desire to use art as cultural diplomacy, bridging geographical boundaries and fostering understanding between diverse communities. Beyond capturing the beauty of Yemeni architecture and landscapes, she aims to raise awareness about her homeland’s rich cultural heritage and the challenges facing its people.
In addition to her focus on Yemen, Alshejni is passionate about raising awareness about Palestine, using her art for advocacy and solidarity. Her commitment to social causes is evident in her participation in group exhibitions like “I Wish I Were a Candle,” where she showcases her artwork to support Palestinian students in Egypt.
As Najat Alshejni continues to evolve as an artist, her work serves as a testament to the power of art to transcend borders and ignite meaningful dialogue. Through her heartfelt creations, she invites viewers to embark on a journey of introspection, reflection, and appreciation for the cultural tapestry that shapes our world.
