Renowned Indian video artist Nalini Malani has been honored as the recipient of the Kyoto Prize in the Arts and philosophy. Celebrated for her groundbreaking contributions to the field, Malani is recognized as an artist who fearlessly amplifies the voices of the marginalized and champions the decentralization of art. Born in Karachi and later settling in India, Malani combines various mediums such as videos, paintings, drawings, and installations to create socially-engaged artworks. She is particularly fascinated by mythological figures like Medea and Cassandra, using their stories to explore themes of gender, power, and societal struggles.
In 2017, Malani achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first contemporary Indian artist to be featured in a retrospective at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The prestigious Kyoto Prize, awarded by the Inamori Foundation, bestows a cash prize of 1 million yen (approximately US $700,000) upon three laureates each year in the categories of Basic Sciences, Advanced Technology, and Arts and Philosophy. Kazuo Inamori, the founder of the foundation, envisioned the prize to honor individuals whose accomplishments significantly contribute to the betterment of humanity in cultural, scientific, and spiritual realms.
With the consultation of the Nobel Foundation, Inamori established the Kyoto Prize in 1984, aiming to recognize exceptional individuals who strive to bring true happiness to mankind. Past recipients of the Kyoto Prize in the arts category include renowned artists such as Joan Jonas, William Kentridge, Nam June Paik, Roy Lichtenstein, and Isamu Noguchi. Since its inception, the Kyoto Prize has recognized the achievements of 120 individuals and one group—the Nobel Foundation.
Nalini Malani, along with her fellow laureates, reproductive biologist Ryuzo Yanagimachi and mathematical physicist Elliot H. Lieb, will be presented with their awards during a ceremony on November 10th. The accolades include a diploma and a prestigious 20-carat gold medal. This recognition of Nalini Malani’s exceptional artistic contributions underscores her significant impact in pushing boundaries, addressing social issues, and captivating audiences with her thought-provoking and visually stunning works.
