Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi has launched Public Art Abu Dhabi, an initiative that furthers the emirate’s long legacy of investing in culture and cementing it into the fabric of the city.
The initiative comprises three primary undertakings: Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial, scheduled to commence in November 2024, which will showcase new commissions throughout the city; Manar Abu Dhabi, a platform that exhibits various light artworks that highlight the distinctive scenery and natural splendor of the city; and annual direct commissions across the city.
The programs introduced by the initiative will mirror the cultural identity that is inherent to the capital, creating a feeling of belonging and nurturing creativity. The initiative places significant importance on community involvement, serving as a stimulant for artistic expression and creativity in public spaces. By providing new cultural programming, Public Art Abu Dhabi will offer chances for individuals to participate in cultural activities.
The initiative was inaugurated with the unveiling of WAVE, a public digital media artwork by the artistic collective d’strict, in Abu Dhabi’s Cultural Foundation. Using an anamorphic illusion technique, the 2D installation recreates perpetually surging three-dimensional waves and was first showcased at COEX K-Pop Square, Seoul, South Korea.
The initiative will play a role in preserving significant urban and architectural areas by enriching their historical, social, aesthetic, scientific, and technological importance to society. The initiative aligns with the Modern Heritage Conservation Initiative (MHCI) of DCT Abu Dhabi, which strives to recognize, protect, and upkeep locations that tell the story of the nation’s recent history. By doing so, the initiative will expand the objectives of MHCI.
