Indonesian architecture firm RAD+ar has completed a striking home renovation that transforms a contemporary residence into an expansive, multi-level sanctuary. Designed for an architect couple, the project celebrates the home’s original geometry while introducing thoughtful new elements that balance openness with intimate, tactile spaces.
The redesigned interior adopts a seamless, open-plan concept. Walls and corridors were selectively removed to create an uninterrupted visual and physical flow, allowing daylight to dance through the rooms and shadows to animate the surfaces. This careful play between introversion and openness crafts a dynamic, sensory-rich living experience.
A restrained material palette further enhances the home’s tranquil atmosphere. Light wooden floors blend harmoniously with birch plywood ceiling panels, while muted gray and brown tones coat the walls. In contrast, the kitchen introduces a sleek, modern edge with its brushed stainless steel surfaces, offering a cool, industrial departure from the natural textures elsewhere.
One of the home’s standout features is the attic, where terracotta tiles frame a sunken conversation pit. This inviting nook not only anchors the space with earthy warmth but also embodies RAD+ar’s social design philosophy. The pit’s custom upholstery subtly echoes the bespoke bedframe found in the adjacent bedroom, establishing visual continuity across private and communal zones.
Meanwhile, the bathroom punctuates the home’s neutral palette with a playful burst of orange-brown tiles in the open shower — a surprising splash of color that enlivens the serene, understated aesthetic.
