The world’s largest carpet, a one-of-a-kind masterpiece with stunning beauty and design, is housed in the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque’s main prayer hall. A group of the world’s finest experienced artisans and weavers hand-knotted the carpet.
Around 1,200 craftspeople worked on the wool and cotton carpet by hand. It is 5,400 square metres in size, with 40 knots per 6.5 cm and 2.5 billion knots total, and weighs 35 tonnes when finished.
Despite its immense size, the carpet was constructed as a single piece, earning it the title of world’s largest carpet in 2017 from the Guinness Book of Records. It took about a year to complete the knotting.
The carpet covers the floor of the main prayer hall and accentuates its splendour with its unique harmony and integration of aesthetic aspects. The hand-woven carpet has an incredible design that resembles a mirror of the chandelier above it. Its background is made up of 25 natural colours derived from traditional herbs such as local madar roots, pomegranate peels, leaf veins, and other natural elements.
The carpet is primarily green, giving the space a sense of serenity and warmth. To keep the design looking beautiful, the rows of worshipers on the carpet were defined using a shaving method.
The carpet weaving takes place over a 5,000-square-metre built-up area in three huge workplaces. The carpet is one of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque’s most beautiful features, thanks to its high-quality materials, vibrant colours, and innovative design. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre is in charge of its maintenance, which takes more than 12 days and is meticulously planned by expert personnel.
