QuadroDesign’s headquarters now houses a versatile artist retreat.
Studio Wok has repurposed a disused electrical cabin at QuadroDesign’s headquarters in northern Italy into a minimalist artist residency. This project seamlessly integrates contemporary design elements with the building’s original structure, offering a unique space for both commercial events and artistic residencies.
Retaining the Original Shape
The cabin, originally housing electrical infrastructure for the production facility, retained its original form but was adapted for domestic use. Studio Wok expanded upwards into the existing roof space, converting its unusual height into a functional living area. The design process focused on “domesticating” the space, making it suitable for a residency while maintaining its industrial character.
Interior Design and Features
Inside, the cabin features an open-plan ground floor with reconfigured openings to improve the connection to the outdoors. Built-in joinery along the rear wall includes steps that lead to a metal staircase, with a wall of cabinets concealing a bathroom for temporary accommodation. The upper mezzanine levels offer intimate spaces, including a sleeping area and a small seating area that enjoys natural light from a nearby window.
Outdoor Spaces and Amenities
Studio Wok also created several outdoor spaces, including a pergola with an outdoor kitchen and dining area. Constructed from galvanised steel, the pergola houses a custom-built kitchen counter made from stone and metal. The outdoor area is completed with a partially sunken pool clad in anthracite stone, creating a space for relaxation and defining the landscaped zone around the cabin.
Studio Wok’s transformation of an old electrical cabin into a functional artist residency reflects their commitment to blending contemporary design with existing structures. The project combines minimalism, functionality, and a deep respect for the cabin’s industrial roots, offering a peaceful and inspiring space for artists and visitors alike.
