Steve Jobs has been commemorated by the United States Mint as California’s representative in the 2026 American Innovation $1 Coin Program. The newly issued dollar coin places the late technology pioneer within a national series dedicated to innovation and historic achievement across all 50 states, territories, and the District of Columbia.

Scheduled for public release on May 12, the coin features a portrait of a young Jobs on its reverse, set against the oak-covered landscape of Northern California. The design closely reflects the region associated with Apple’s rise and the development of Silicon Valley’s entrepreneurial culture.

In addition, the coin bears the engraved phrase “Make Something Wonderful,” a reference to remarks Jobs made during an internal Apple employee meeting on October 23, 2007. The inscription reinforces the program’s focus on innovation not only as technological advancement, but also as a cultural and creative force.

Design Connects Technology and American Cultural History

The reverse composition presents Jobs in a reflective pose rather than through overt technological symbolism. Consequently, the design emphasizes his broader cultural influence and his role in reshaping communication, product design, and digital interaction.

According to Mint Director Paul Hollis, the release recognizes Jobs’ enduring contribution to California’s entrepreneurial and technological legacy. Production has been intentionally limited to exactly 25,950 units, available to the public.

Collectors will be able to purchase the coins directly through official U.S. Mint channels in either 100-coin bags priced at $154.50 USD or 25-coin rolls priced at $61 USD. The coins are produced at both the Philadelphia and Denver minting facilities, while household purchases are capped at 10 items to reduce speculative bulk buying.

The obverse side unifies the wider 2026 collection through a shared Statue of Liberty profile accompanied by a Liberty Bell and a “250” privy mark commemorating America’s Semiquincentennial.

Innovation Program Expands Numismatic Storytelling

Launched in 2018, the American Innovation $1 Coin Program has increasingly transformed commemorative currency into a platform for historical and cultural storytelling. Each coin honors a breakthrough, invention, or influential figure connected to a specific state or territory.

For the 2026 series, California’s tribute to Steve Jobs appears alongside Iowa’s recognition of Norman Borlaug, Wisconsin’s celebration of the Cray-1, and Minnesota’s acknowledgment of early mobile refrigeration technology.

As a result, the series positions everyday currency as both a collectible object and a condensed timeline of American scientific, industrial, and creative achievement. Jobs’ inclusion further reflects the expanding role of technology leaders within broader narratives of national cultural history and design innovation.
