Zaha Hadid Architects has unveiled plans for Napoli Porta Est, a large-scale urban regeneration project in eastern Naples, Italy. At its core, two conjoined towers will serve as a new architectural landmark. These towers will house office spaces, including the regional government headquarters.

The towers feature a dynamic design, with their base curving seamlessly from the ground. They aim to blend with the surrounding environment, creating a more integrated and vibrant cityscape.
Transforming Industrial Spaces into a Modern Urban Hub
Napoli Porta Est will redevelop over 100 hectares of land, much of which consists of abandoned industrial buildings. This area has long suffered from poor connectivity, leaving it isolated from the rest of Naples. The new plan introduces infrastructure upgrades, green spaces, and public amenities to improve mobility and social interaction.
The project will repurpose over 30 hectares of old structures, including a former tobacco factory and oil depot. Some will become residential buildings, while others will transform into community and civic spaces.
Sustainable Design and Architectural Innovation
Standing at approximately 100 meters and 80 meters, the towers will become the focal point of the masterplan. The lower floors will feature public spaces, including a cinema and a conference center. Offices will have adaptable layouts to meet future needs.
The towers will use a hybrid concrete and steel structure, with specially designed glazing to minimize sun exposure. This design maximizes natural light while providing panoramic views of Mount Vesuvius and the Gulf of Naples.
Around the towers, tree-lined squares will link to a new 10-hectare urban park. Developed with landscape architect Martha Schwartz, the park will feature native trees, landscaped gardens, and public plazas.
Enhancing Infrastructure and Environmental Sustainability
The project will also address traffic congestion by introducing a new regional rail station. This addition will improve connections to Naples and Italy’s national transport network.
To tackle climate challenges, the development incorporates sponge city principles, improving water absorption in public spaces to reduce flooding. Geothermal energy and 7,000 square meters of solar panels will contribute to sustainable energy use.
A Bold Step in European Urban Redevelopment
Zaha Hadid Architects describes Napoli Porta Est as one of Europe’s largest urban regeneration projects. Its scale is comparable to the redevelopment of King’s Cross in London.
With its blend of modern architecture, sustainability, and urban connectivity, Napoli Porta Est aims to transform eastern Naples. It will bridge the gap between the city’s industrial past and a greener, more connected future.
