Zayed National Museum has been named one of the world’s most beautiful museums for 2026 by Prix Versailles, the annual global prize presented at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. The institution is the only museum from the Middle East included in this year’s selection.
Each year, Prix Versailles recognizes projects that combine architectural innovation, sustainability, cultural significance, and design excellence. Introduced in 2024, the museum category selects seven institutions globally, with additional awards for interior, exterior, and overall design announced later in the year.
Located within the Saadiyat Cultural District, the museum was designed by Norman Foster, founder of Foster + Partners and recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. The 56,000-square-metre structure is defined by five steel towers inspired by the wings of a falcon in flight, referencing the UAE’s deep-rooted falconry traditions.
Architecture Inspired by Landscape and Climate
Rising 123 metres above the cultural district, the towers also serve an environmental function. Acting as thermal chimneys, they regulate airflow naturally throughout the building and reduce dependence on mechanical cooling systems. Consequently, the museum integrates sustainability directly into its architectural identity rather than treating it as an added feature.

The building’s base takes the form of a sculpted mound textured to echo the desert terrain of the United Arab Emirates. In addition, the structure provides insulation against solar heat while visually grounding the museum within its landscape.
Surrounding the museum, the Al Masar Garden extends this environmental strategy through native vegetation and a traditional falaj irrigation system. Therefore, the project links contemporary museum architecture with regional ecological and agricultural heritage.
A Museum Dedicated to Emirati Identity
Inside, six permanent galleries explore more than 300,000 years of regional history, spanning archaeological discoveries, cultural development, and the formation of the modern UAE. The museum also centers its narrative on the life and legacy of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, emphasizing his role in shaping national identity and preserving Emirati cultural heritage.
Beyond its architectural recognition, the museum reflects the UAE’s broader investment in cultural infrastructure and global museum development. As part of the rapidly expanding Saadiyat Cultural District, it joins a growing concentration of internationally recognized institutions in Abu Dhabi.
Other museums selected by Prix Versailles for 2026 include the Shenzhen Science & Technology Museum, Xuelei Fragrance Museum, MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives, Lost Shtetl Museum, National Medal of Honor Museum, and Centre for Islamic Civilisation.
