Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial 2026 Expands Across Abu Dhabi and Al Ain

The Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial 2026 will return for its second edition with exhibitions and site-specific commissions across Al Ain and Abu Dhabi. The program opens in Al Ain on 23 October before launching in Abu Dhabi on 15 November, transforming public spaces with installations that encourage residents and visitors to experience contemporary art beyond museums and galleries. Led by artistic director Elvira Dyangani Ose, the biennial adopts the theme Home: A Glossary for a Communal Sense of Place, examining how communities, shared experiences, and everyday interactions shape the meaning of home.

Home Becomes the Biennial’s Curatorial Focus

Rather than defining home as a fixed geographical location, the biennial presents it as a living concept formed through relationships, movement, and collective memory. Accordingly, the program will feature newly commissioned artworks, research-led projects, and public events that invite audiences to engage with public space in new ways. By placing contemporary art within streets, parks, and civic environments, the biennial seeks to strengthen connections between people, place, and culture.

The exhibition is directed by Elvira Dyangani Ose, the former director of MACBA (Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona). Under her curatorial leadership, the second edition expands the biennial’s focus on participation and dialogue while responding to the evolving urban landscapes of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.

Design Analysis: Public Space as a Cultural Canvas

The biennial builds on the inaugural edition, which ran from November 2024 to April 2025 under the theme Public Matter and introduced large-scale installations across the emirate. Among its notable commissions was Barzakh by Wael Al Awar, a domed structure on the Abu Dhabi Corniche created from industrial waste, recycled plastic, and palm fiber, demonstrating how sustainable materials can shape contemporary public art. Meanwhile, Tentarium by Paweł Althamer transformed Lake Park with a playful cat-shaped pavilion that encouraged interaction through sculpture and public space.

Several works from the inaugural edition have since remained as permanent or long-term installations, contributing to Abu Dhabi’s expanding public art collection. Consequently, the biennial continues to view public art not only as an artistic intervention but also as a tool to strengthen civic identity and enrich everyday urban experiences.

Strengthening Abu Dhabi’s Public Art Landscape

The Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial 2026 forms part of the wider Public Art Abu Dhabi initiative led by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, which aims to integrate contemporary art into public spaces while supporting cultural heritage and artistic innovation. Furthermore, the program reinforces the emirate’s strategy to make art more accessible by embedding creative experiences into daily life. By commissioning new works across Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, the biennial continues to position public art as an essential element of urban design, cultural dialogue, and community engagement.
