2,500-year-old Ancient Greek Catacombs discovered in Naples

Deep below the bustling streets of Naples, Italy, lies a hidden treasure of ancient Greek history. For years, archaeologists knew of the existence of an ancient Greek tomb, but accessing it seemed impossible. However, utilizing cutting-edge technology, researchers have finally unveiled this long-awaited discovery.

Naples, formerly known as Cumae, was the very first Greek colony in Italy. Around 650 BCE, it was renamed Neapolis, meaning “New City.” This powerful Greek colony boasted its own forum, an array of temples, and a network of underground catacombs. These ancient structures, located 33 feet beneath the modern city of Naples, have held valuable insights into Greek life in Italy. Yet, until recently, they remained beyond the reach of archaeologists.

The breakthrough came with the aid of an innovative scientific method involving subatomic particles known as muons. Muons are cosmic rays that can penetrate solid matter, allowing researchers to study hidden spaces without the need for extensive excavation. By utilizing a specialized form of photosensitive film and a large flatbed scanner-like detection unit, archaeologists successfully identified a burial chamber dating back to the sixth to third centuries BCE.

To capture the scattering of muons, which originate from within Earth’s atmosphere, the research team had to position their muon detection devices in a location beneath the target area. In this case, physicist Valeri Tioukov from Italy’s National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) placed the devices in a 19th-century cellar located nearly 60 feet underground. Over a period of 28 days, these devices recorded the movement of muon particles, known as the muon flux, providing crucial insights into the hidden burial chamber.

While the data collected from the 10 million recorded muons unveiled the approximate dimensions of a 6.5-by-11.5-foot structure, the detailed intricacies of the burial chamber remain shrouded in mystery. Tioukov explained that the current configuration of the technology allows for the visualization of the room’s rough shape but falls short of revealing small details such as bones.

This technique, known as muography, has proven its effectiveness in previous endeavors. It has been employed to unveil a concealed corridor located above the ancient entrance to the Great Pyramid of Giza. Additionally, muography was utilized in the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that devastated the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan, enabling scientists to search for remnants of fuel within the reactor.

In Naples, the use of muons has opened a window into the past, shedding light on an ancient burial chamber that has eluded archaeologists for centuries. With further advancements and refinements in muography, researchers hope to unlock more of the hidden secrets beneath our feet and gain a deeper understanding of the rich history that lies beneath the world’s bustling cities.
