The NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) Art Gallery has announced its 2022 schedule, with upcoming major exhibitions focusing on artistic practices in the Gulf. Ramin Haerizadeh, Rokni Haerizadeh, and Hesam Rahmanian will hold their first institutional solo show in March.
The three Iranian artists frequently collaborate on bizarre and immersive projects ranging from performances to paintings. They have been major figures in the art world in Dubai for 13 years, collaborating with other artists, training younger practitioners, and even incorporating the general public in their artistic activations.
They’ve shown at biennials and institutions around the world, including the Liverpool Biennial and Sydney Biennial, as well as the Kunsthalle Zurich and MACBA Barcelona. The group is also working on a project for London’s Hayward Gallery.
The show at NYUAD Art Gallery, titled Parthenogenesis: Ramin Haerizadeh, Rokni Haerizadeh, Hesam Rahmanian, will follow the artists’ methods as they take over the space to create a “landscape” within the gallery, seeing how artworks develop via collective and collaborative actions. It will take place from March 1 to June 12 this year.
Khaleej Modern is a critical examination of the Gulf’s modern art history from before the oil boom of the 1970s until 2008, bringing new narratives and art trends to light. Khaleej Modern’s opening date will be announced later this year.
NYUAD Art Gallery has created two collaborations this year, one with the National Pavilion UAE for its show at the Venice Biennale in April, where NYUAD’s top curator Maya Allison curated the presentation on Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim.
The second collaboration is with the Middle East Institute in Washington, DC, for the exhibition Between the Sky and the Earth, which featured 12 contemporary artists living and working in the UAE and was curated by Munira Al Sayegh.
